The Pendant:
The Tuareg (sometimes spelt Touareg in French) are a nomadic people of Niger and surrounding countries. Tuaregs were originally worn by men, and passed down from father to son with the words, "My son, I give you the four corners of the world because one cannot know where one will go after this life.” These wonderful, strong talismans are symbols of protection, power, and vitality for men. They are worn by men throughout West Africa, and are used as currency to buy cattle and food. There are many variants of the Tuareg design- some have filigree, which is similar to lace except it is made of metal instead of cloth.
My personal choice for men is the pendant shown here which is strong and masculine. The metal used for each Tuareg is unknown; often they are made from a combination of materials- brass, copper, nickel, and silver.
